What Our Carers Do:

Maintaining Hygiene / Grooming of Resident
  • Bed bath/Shower/Assist with bathing
  • Washing and drying of hair
  • Skin care
  • Shaving of male patients
  • Nail care
  • Oral care: Brushing teeth / Clean dentures 3 X per day
  • Changing of adult disposable diaper (nappies)
  • Assist with dressing clothes of the resident’s choice according to weather circumstances & maintaining the correct body temperature.
  • Ensure that reading glasses are cleaned and fitted onto face.
  • Assist with fitting of hearing aids.
  • Pressure care.
Maintaining a clean room environment – DELIVER BASIC DOMESTIC CHORES

Carers are not domestic cleaners, Nurses R Us can provide you with a domestic cleaner should it be required.

Our carers do provide the following domestic chores:

  • Make the bed.
  • Change the linen.
  • Clean washing basin.
  • Cleaning of grooming equipment.
  • Keep clothes cupboards neat and tidy.
  • Removal of dirty crockery from the room.
  • Removal of dirty laundry.
  • Removal of domestic refuge e.g., dirty crockery, old fruit, old flowers, emptying of waste baskets etc.
  • Dusting of all surfaces around the patient.
  • Washing and cleaning of all medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers) weekly.
  • To always keep areas around the patient clean.
  • Ensure to wash, dry fold dirty clothes and linen
Infection prevention
  • Washing hands regularly & after completion of each task.
  • Wearing of surgical gloves at all relevant times. (e.g., changing of nappies etc.)
  • Maintaining a clean bathroom.
  • Soaking of bedpans, urinals, sputum mugs daily.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of basins before and after it is used for bed bathing.
  • Wiping plastic covered mattresses with antiseptic solution before changing linen/making bed of incontinent resident.
Safety: Prevention of Injuries and Other Complications:
  • Maintain safe ambulation of a wheelchair bound resident, or other ambulation devices used.
  • Perform 2 hourly rounds to do pressure care and changing of adult disposable diaper (nappy).
  • Elevate feet and legs of a resident when sitting out in a chair.
  • Ensure that bedridden residents are cared for on an eggshell / ripple / air mattress to prevent pressure ulcers.
  • Supervise and motivate 4 hourly Range of Motion (ROM) passive exercises of limbs and wrists.
  • Ensure that linen and blankets are not too tight over toes and knees.
  • Check that brakes of wheelchair/wheelers are functional and that foot rests are fitted onto the wheelchairs before it is used.
  • DO NOT AMBULATE A RESIDENT WHO FELL – OUR CARERS WILL IMMEDIATELY REPORT TO FAMILY/CASE MANAGER for instructions.
Nutrition and fluid intake / output:
  • Preparation of meals and snacks if needed.
  • Assist with serving of meals, cutting meats and vegetables into smaller bite size portions.
  • Assist with spreading and cutting of bread/toast.
  • Assist with feeding patient – taking a sitting position when feeding.
  • Ensure water glass/bottle is filled and to be readily available to prevent choking.
  • Water intake at least 200ml every two hours.
Social activities:
  • Ensure if indicated, to accompany resident to participate in social/recreation activities scheduled e.g., Bingo, Bridge, building puzzles, Hobbies class, Musical instrument playing.
  • Ambulate residents to go to the garden, church and/or bible reading.
Communication:
  • MAINTAIN CONVERSATIONS ONLY IN ENGLISH WITH EACH OTHER WHILST ON DUTY
  • MAINTAIN CONVERSATIONS ONLY IN ENGLISH WITH RESIDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES, UNLESS AGREED TO COMMUNICATE IN AFRIKAANS
  • Display a friendly, approachable body language and address colleagues, residents and family in a respectful manner.
  • Provide empathetic care to the family of a deceased resident.
  • Participate in debriefing session after the death of a resident.
  • Maintain confidentiality on all medical information related to the resident – refer enquiries to the case manager/primary care giver/matron/assignee (STRICT ADHERENCE TO THE POPI ACT)
Asset Management:
  • Use equipment with care and report accident damage of equipment immediately to resident/case manager/family member.
  • Under no circumstances may any property or any resident be removed from any room or premises without written consent of a family member and/or case manager/primary care giver/ matron/ assignee.
Record Keeping:
  • To ensure all necessary documentation in the resident’s file are up to date.
  • The medical file of a patient is a legal document and if same is not kept up to date, then penalties will be handed down as per the Company Rules and Regulations and the carer will be summarily dismissed.
  • IF IT IS NOT WRITTEN DOWN, IT IS NOT DONE!!!
Important to remember:
  • Our carers are NOT allowed to watch television during working hours, except when accompanied by the patient.
  • As the carer of a resident, our carer do keep in mind that they are a guest in their home. They will ask if they want or need something.
  • Carers will use water and electricity sparingly.
  • Carers will only use the appointed toilet facilities.
  • Any other/further instructions as given by the case manager/primary care giver/matron/assignee are to be completed as per the instruction.
  • If carers are not on duty at a patient’s residence they may not attend the resident’s home for personal errands.
Use of Cell Phones
  • OUR CARERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE ON THEIR CELL PHONE DURING WORKING HOURS EXCEPT IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY OF WHICH PROOF MUST BE SUPPLIED.
  • THEY ARE UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOWED TO RECORD OR ACCESS ANY SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM INCLUDING AND NOT LIMITED TO FACEBOOK, TIKTOK AND INSTAGRAM.
